WCTC to host Women's History Month, Cesar Chavez events in March

PEWAUKEE, Wis. (Tuesday, March 3, 2020) – Waukesha County Technical College’s Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) is proud to host two events in March to commemorate Women’s History Month and Cesar Chavez Day, respectively, along with a special event in April for Diversity Awareness Month. All events, which will be held in the Richard T. Anderson Education Center on the main Pewaukee campus, are free and open to the public; however, registration is required and space is limited. A light lunch is also included with all events.

• On Wednesday, March 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., guest speaker Carmen De La Paz will present Women in History and Trade. De La Paz is a carpenter, interior designer and television personality known for her work on HGTV’s “Hammer Heads,” “Design Star” and “All American Handyman,” as well as OWN’s “Home Made Simple” among other programs. • On Tuesday, March 31, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., WCTC welcomes Ramon Rogelio Ortiz Jr., Ph.D., for Cesar Chavez Day. Ortiz has a broad cross section of public and private sector experience in real estate, construction, the mortgage industry and higher education. He is currently an associate dean at Madison College. This federal holiday commemorates the birth and legacy of American farm worker, civil rights activist and labor leader Cesar Chavez. To register for the event, visit https://tinyurl.com/ACCE20.

• On Wednesday, April 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., anti-racism activist and writer Tim Wise will present Challenging the Culture of Cruelty: Understanding and Defeating Race and Class Inequity in America. Wise was named one of “25 Visionaries Who are Changing Your World” by Utne Reader; he has also contributed chapters and essays to more than 25 books, and his writings are taught in colleges and universities throughout the nation. Waukesha County Technical College’s MRC promotes cross-cultural communication, awareness and understanding through programs, events and leadership development, said Rolando DeLeón, diversity coordinator at WCTC.

“The Multicultural Resource Center is focused on providing programming that promotes awareness on a variety of issues,” DeLeón said. “It is our hope to educate, promote and provide services to build a supportive environment in which all students can develop a better understanding and appreciation for the multiculturalism in our community and beyond.”
