We Cannot Afford the Extension of the "Safer At Home" Order

In this article, is a letter you can copy to send to our elected representatives.

Yesterday, Governor Evers announced an extension of the 'Safer at Home' order until May 26th. While many of us have been able to limp through one month of this shut down, it is clear that business supply chains are quickly eroding. We need to get back to some semblance of normalcy NOW or our livelihoods will be utterly DESTROYED. Of course, we support continuing to follow protective measures such as social distancing, handwashing and health monitoring. That said, this draconian order cannot be allowed to stand and we need to pressure our lawmakers to take a hard stand on our behalf.

To that end, we have prepared a letter that you can simply cut and paste and email to your State and Federal officials.

Please get this out quickly. We need action and we need these 'leaders' to act NOW!

Businesses and individuals in our state were sold on the “Safer at Home” order as the best way to flatten the curve of COVID-19 cases and prevent the healthcare system from collapsing. The time frame of the order seemed draconian at the start, but most acquiesced and have made good faith efforts to comply despite grave concerns about the order’s economic impact. At this point, any reasonable individual who is dealing in good faith must conclude that the stated objectives of this order have been met, and the sacrifices made by businesses and individuals in this state must be stopped before more irreparable harm is done. The “Safer at Home” order was based on data which most responsible sources now admit overestimated the severity of disease.

Our business is seeing the catastrophic effects of this order (and others like it in nearby states) on the manufacturing supply chain. If the course is not reversed in short order, more jobs will be lost and businesses will close permanently. Businesses need firm plans and certainty to re-start operations at normal levels – including the certainty that you will fight ANY attempts to repeat this order in the future.

We further advise that the destruction of our businesses and livelihoods, and the sacrifice of any semblance of any individual liberties or rights in the face of an apparently all-powerful state, will in all likelihood exceed the damage to our state and country caused by the virus itself.

Our company rejects the extension of the ‘Safer at Home Order’ through May 26th. We will hold you accountable for applying any possible pressure to reverse this immediately. We demand a complete re-opening of our state economy. We do not want “timelines” or “plans”. We will happily comply with state healthcare guidelines for continuing operations in light of this virus being a part of day-to-day life, but it is time for business and life in this state to resume. The extension of this order represents bad-faith dealings and a misrepresentation of the stated goals of the policy.

Make no mistake, we are watching the actions of our elected representatives carefully. While we understand that available legislative actions are somewhat limited, it is our expectation that you will be using all available platforms to demand closure of this order at the original date of April 24th. Silence on this matter is akin to acceptance and support of this order extension. Please know that our business will no longer support any politician who is silent on this matter, in fact we will see to it that we recruit others to run against you.

This is no longer about having a party designation next to your name. The matters that usually bind parties together are inconsequential compared to the gravity of this quarantine order. We demand that you fight as hard as we are.

Sincerely,

"
