Wauwatosa 2017 Taxes by the numbers:
- The 2017 tax rate is down 0.6% from 2016 - from $23.69 per $1,000 of assessed value to $23.56.
- The net average decrease on the tax bill, based on an average home ($223,000) that qualifies for the first dollar and lottery tax credits, is $11.38.
- The assessed value in the city has increased 2.3%.
- The city's tax rate, which is 31% of the total tax bill, has increased from $7.68 to $7.77, a 1.3% increase and the city's portion of the tax bill increased $22.28 for the average home in Wauwatosa.
- The City of Wauwatosa collects taxes for the Wauwatosa School District. Their tax rate decreased 3.4% from $8.90 to $8.59, as aid from the State of Wisconsin to the School District increased this year. However, the School Tax Levy Credit increased by $0.13 per $1,000 of assessed value (9.9%). This results in a net school tax rate decrease on the tax bill of 6%.
- The other taxing jurisdictions that Wauwatosa collects for are Milwaukee County, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), and Milwaukee Area Technical College all had rate increases ranging from 4.1% to 5.4%. This is due to an increase in their levies and an increase in the proportion of their levy paid by the City of Wauwatosa taxpayers.
- Due to a recent change in state law, the State of Wisconsin is no longer levying property taxes through municipalities, which reduced the overall levy for Wauwatosa. The state portion was under 1% of the total tax bill in a typical year.
- The change in the tax rate can be attributed to many moving parts, such as the increase in assessed value, changes in the property tax levies, the increase in equalized value, the State of Wisconsin levy no longer being collected through the city's tax bill, and the decrease in Wauwatosa School District's tax rate.
