Action Law discusses motorcycle helmets

A Reuters article in May of 2015 shared how transportation regulators are calling for: "Stronger rules for substandard motorcycle helmets."

The issue involves the usage of ‘”novelty” helmets, (those made for “trendy looks” rather than for the purpose of safety). Helmets that do not meet federal safety standards sometimes have warnings that say, “not intended for highway use,” yet some people chose to wear them anyway. Non-compliant helmets such as the “shorty” example shown in this picture, appeal to the buyer because of their appearance and the fact that they cost less than most compliant helmets.

Motorcycle Accident Deaths: Each year more than 2,200 people are killed and more than 55,000 are injured in motorcycle crashes. *Per mile driven, a motorcyclist is 16 times more likely to die in a crash than an automobile driver. Wearing a motorcycle helmet reduces that risk by almost one-third. (29%) Motorcycle accident deaths are at least partially due to wearing a substandard helmet, or not wearing a helmet at all. The Department of Transportation notes that a despite how a helmet looks or feels, those which are not DOT approved will not protect the head in an event of an accident.

Wisconsin Helmet Laws: Bikers have rights, but so do the drivers who share the road. Therefore, helmet law or not, most of us feel that a helmet is a must. Illinois, Iowa and New Hampshire are the only states that do not legally bind motorcycle riders of various ages to wear helmets. In Wisconsin, bikers and passengers 17 and younger must wear a helmet. Persons over the age of 18 can make the personal decision that is right for them. Find U.S. motorcycle helmet laws here: State-By-State guide to motorcycle helmet laws

Inferior or approved helmet: Because substandard or ‘novelty, ’non-compliant,’ helmets can be found just about anywhere, we wanted to share some things to look for in order to identify them. To find out if a helmet you’re wearing is legit, look for a DOT sticker on the back of the helmet or proper inside labeling. Instructions to the purchaser regarding construction and other safety-related information such as Snell or the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), are also good indicators. As a last result, keep in mind that the non-approved safety helmets will cost significantly less. With a closer look, you may notice that the parts appear to be “cheap.” (Flimsy rivets and chin straps, visibly thinner inner and outer shell….lighter in weight.)

*Encourage loved ones who are bikers to wear a compliant motorcycle helmet. Remember to be an alert driver; aware of your surroundings, giving yourself some extra time, and remaining courteous to fellow drivers. ұ-+6
