The City of Wauwatosa Tourism Commission was awarded $146,011.50 through a Destination Marketing Organization grant provided by the Wisconsin Department of Administration through funding made available by the federal American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. This grant was designed to assist tourism promotion and development organizations that were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tourism Commission is one of 120 organizations in Wisconsin to receive funding. Funding received will be used to off-set eligible tourism promotion expenses.
The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted travel and hotel stays in 2020 and 2021. The Tourism Commission received just $63,758 in hotel tax revenue in 2020, a 94.6% decrease from the $1.18 million that was forecasted prior to the pandemic. The Commission’s sole funding mechanism is hotel tax revenue and the organization had to make significant budget cuts to operate during the pandemic. The grant funds being awarded will aid in the organization’s financial recovery from the pandemic and assist in promoting Wauwatosa to outside visitors.Â
