Detour City: 2 Road Projects Wauwatosa Residents Should Know About

Here are two major road construction projects that will be impacting Wauwatosa residents and the surrounding communities

WAUWATOSA, WI — It's often said that there are two seasons in Wisconsin: winter and construction season. With that happy notion in mind, here are two major road construction projects that will be impacting Wauwatosa residents and the surrounding communities:

Capitol Drive and I-41 Project

The first phase of construction work at Capitol Drive and I-41 is slated to begin July 5th. During the first phase, closures will be in the following places:

  • I-41 South to eastbound Capitol Drive
  • Westbound Capitol Drive to I-41 South
  • Eastbound Capitol Drive to I-41 North
  • I-41 North exit to Capitol Drive

A second phase of work may require additional closures; those details will be posted as the project develops.

Drivers are encouraged to take Burleigh Street, WIS 100, Hampton Avenue and 124th Street as alternate routes. Pedestrians should follow detour route signs, obey sidewalk closure signage and consider an alternative route through the area.

Watertown Plank Road - Underwood Creek Bridges Rehabilitation

Beginning the week of July 2nd, WisDOT is scheduled to begin work on two bridges along Watertown Plank Road over Underwood creek for structural rehabilitation. The existing bridge decks will be removed and replaced while updating the existing girders. The new bridge decks will be widened to provide additional accommodation for bicyclists. Work will continue until Fall 2018.

Work will be done in stages to ensure that single lane traffic will still be available in each direction for the duration of the project. At times during the project, the Oak Leaf Trail crossing will need to be closed. Closure dates and detours will be posted as they are available.

An open house public meeting with be held at the City of Wauwatosa Public Works Building located at 11100 W. Walnut Road, Wauwatosa, WI on June 28th from 5-7 p.m. to discuss plans, detours and the proposed timeline of the project.
