Drunk Man Arrested on I-94 On His Way to Wisconsin Dells With Loaded Gun in Car

The man told officers he was going to Wisconsin Dells, and later upon his arrest, also informed officers he had a gun in the vehicle.

MILWAUKEE -- A man has been arrested and charged after Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputies stopped his vehicle on I-94.

According to his criminal complaint, several motorists informed deputies that Matthew Bauer, 35, of Milwaukee, was behind the wheel on I-94 and that he was impaired and falling asleep.

When police conducted a traffic stop on westbound I-94 near South Curtis Road in West Allis on Aug. 6, deputies observed that Bauer had slurred speech and had bloodshot eyes.

According to the complaint, Bauer told officers he was going to Wisconsin Dells, and upon his arrest, also informed officers he had a gun in the vehicle.

When police conducted a search of the vehicle, deputies found a Springfield Arms 45 caliber handgun in the center console with a magazine loaded with nine rounds.

According to the criminal complaint, Bauer's BAC was reported at 0.17 after a blood test - more than twice the legal limit in Wisconsin.

Bauer has been charged with endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon (under the influence of intoxicant) and could face up to nine months in prison or up to $10,000 in fines - or both, if he is convicted.

Bauer's next appearance in court was scheduled for Sep. 27, 2016.
