Macy's Cashier Steals $5,000 In His Only Month On Job

A Macy's employee turned himself in after he was caught stealing more than $5,000 in cash in the one month he worked there.

WAUWATOSA, WI — A Macy's employee turned himself in after he was caught stealing more than $5,000 in cash in the one month he worked there.

On June 29 Wauwatosa police officers responded to Macy’s, 2500 N. Mayfair Rd. for a report on employee theft. Officers spoke with the loss prevention agent, who informed police of more than $5,000 in cash register money shortages linked to an employee by the name of Dion Spears, 20, Milwaukee, according to a criminal complaint filed in Milwaukee County.

According to police, they located 10 incidents where Spears' register came up short - several of which were caught on surveillance video. In the video, Spears is seen opening the register, removing money and putting it into deposit bags and putting it into his pocket.

According to investigators, the incidences on video when the defendant is on video are as follows:

  1. June 12, 2017, Spears’s register was short $274.10.
  2. June 17, 2017, Spear’s register was short $489.98 in cash.
  3. June 19, 2017, Spear’s register was short $220.33 in cash.
  4. June 21, 2017, Spears’ register was short $300.74 in cash.
  5. May 24, 2017, a register used by him had $90.02 was stolen.
  6. June 12, 2017, $1,531.36 was stolen from two registers he was using.
  7. June 17, 2017, $1,800.33 was stolen from two registers he was using.
  8. June 18, 2017, $981.72 was stolen.
  9. June 19, 2017, $322.20 was stolen from two registers he was using.
  10. June 21, 2017, $438.02 was stolen from two registers he was using.

The total amount of money stolen without consent from Macy’s between May 24, 2017, and June 21, 2017, was $5,163.65.

According to the criminal complaint, on July 20, 2017, Spears was arrested after turning himself in at the Wauwatosa Police Department. He told police he was employed at Macy’s between May 24 and June 29 and admitted to stealing cash from Macy’s during his employment but could not provide specific dates or amounts. He stated that he would open a cash register at the end of his shift, place the cash in a clear deposit bag, put the money in his pocket and leave.

Spears has been charged with embezzlement and could face 3 years behind bars if he is convicted.
