Motorcycle Awareness while you Drive

Most motorcycle-related accidents occur between May and October. Being that May is also motorcycle awareness month, it's an ideal time be mindful of those around you.

  • Check Blind Spots:  Drivers also need to check their blind spots frequently. It’s very difficult to judge how fast a motorcycle is travelling, and nobody wants to face charges for violating a rider’s “right-of-way.” When a motorcycle is spotted, drivers should keep an eye on them, and remain especially cautious to blind spots.
  • Use Signals:  Signals are placed in vehicles as a safety precaution, but drivers are sometimes lazy, in too much of a hurry or forget to use them.  (A national survey revealed that 57% of American drivers don’t use them when changing lanes.)  The use of signals is highly recommended, especially for the safety of motorcyclist.
  • Allow More Distance:  Motorcyclists often slow by downshifting or by merely “rolling off the throttle.”  In this situation, the brake light may not activate.  Especially at intersections, be aware that a motorcyclist may slow down without visual warning.  Allowing additional distance between you and the bike can save lives.
  • Be Considerate:  Motorcycle helmet use is on the rise, but there are still a fair number who ride with minimal protection. A collision involving a motorcycle and vehicle usually ends with serious injury or death, so when a motorcycle is in motion, see beyond the bike.  The personunder the helmet could be anyone; your friend, neighbor, relative or co-worker.  Life is too short, so take the extra second needed to be extra cautious.
