Rep. Vining Calls Fellow Lawmakers To Work For Liberty & Justice

“On Monday of this week, George Floyd was killed. America watched as a man was murdered in broad daylight.

“Also on Monday, a white woman in a park called police and lied that a black man was threatening her. We watched in broad daylight as she used racism as her weapon.

“America watched, Wisconsin watched, and some wondered how this could happen, in broad daylight. Others did not wonder, because they know. They know.

“Racism not only exists in broad daylight, it is protected in broad daylight. The violence of racism against humanity has been institutionalized and systematized. It is both protected in broad daylight by the powerful, and it is used as a weapon against people of color every day.

“Every elected leader in the state of Wisconsin needs to stand up now and lead. This is your job. It is your oath. Your people are suffering, and dying, because the violence of racism has been institutionalized and systematized. We work in this system, and every single one of us needs to work to deconstruct the vast and pervasive injustice that is institutionalized and systematized violence against our people.

“As elected officials, we derive our just powers from the consent of the governed. It is our job to secure their rights. And we must work to secure that, as is stated in our state constitution, “All people are born equally free and independent, and have certain inherent rights; among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

“All means all.”
