Sheriff: Alleged Potawatomi Shooter Dies in Jail

Terrill Thomas, 38, was reportedly upset over possible car theft prior to shooting at Potawatomi.

MILWAUKEE - The man who reportedly fired several gunshots inside the Potawatomi Hotel and Casino in an early-morning incident on April 15, has died.

Inmate Terrill Thomas, 38, Milwaukee, was pronounced dead just before 2 a.m. Sunday about a half-hour after he was discovered unresponsive in his cell at the Milwaukee County Jail, according to a Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office release.

He was in custody as the suspect in a recent shooting at Potawatomi Casino, the Sheriff's Department said..

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke directed that Milwaukee Police Department investigate the inmate’s death, to avoid any conflict of interest. An autopsy will be performed by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death, according to a Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office news release.

Thomas had been facing the following charges:
- First Degree Reckless Injury - use of a dangerous weapon.
- Two counts of Possession of a firearm by a felon.
- First degree recklessly endangering safety, use of a dangerous weapon
- Theft ($2,500 to $5,000), use of a dangerous weapon

According to an article published Sunday by Fox 6 Milwaukee, Thomas reportedly was aiming at a man he felt was responsible for stealing his Mercedes-Benz two days prior.

When confronted by authorities, Thomas reportedly dropped the gun into a trash can and laid on the ground as officers recovered the Glock 9 mm firearm.
