Wauwatosa is described as a "solar-ready" community because of the efforts we've taken to reduce barriers to solar projects in our community. Specifically, we have:

  • Created an online solar permitting checklist, increasing transparency for community members and solar installers
  • Reviewed our local zoning codes and identified restrictions that intentionally or unintentionally prohibit solar development
  • Allowed solar by-right accessory use in all zones (so solar installations don’t require special permits or hearings)
  • Cross-trained both inspection and permitting staff on solar

Wauwatosa also recently installed solar panels on top of its 140,000 sq ft. Public Works building, estimated to offset 96 percent of the facility’s annual electricity consumption.
