Spectator Who Died At Erin Hills Reunited With Wife Just Days After Her Death

Marshall Jacobs, 94, the man who died at the U.S. Open Friday, was reunited with is wife Lucille, 88, only days after she died.

ERIN, WI — He was an engineer who once worked on the Apollo moon landing mission. She was a talented seamstress and homemaker. They both loved golf.

Lucille Jacobs, 88, died Tuesday, and her loving husband Marshall, 94, joined her after losing his life on the course at Erin Hills Friday during the U.S. Open.

A touching story by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has given breath to their life stories, including their love of golf, growing up in Rural Wisconsin, and meeting at UW-Madison.

"He got to see his favorite golfer (Stricker) make that last putt," Bill Jacobs said Sunday in the Journal Sentinel story. "Jesus came down and said, 'Hey, Marshall, I'm going to bring you up and reunite you with your wife. Because obviously, you didn't want to spend any more time here."

According to media reports Friday afternoon, an he spectator died while at the event. The medical examiner was called out to the course at 2 p.m.

The U.S.G.A. had issued the following statement on the incident Friday afternoon: “The USGA was saddened to learn that a spectator at Erin Hills passed away a short time ago. Out of respect for the family, we are unable to provide additional information at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with those surrounding this individual during this difficult time.”

According to an obituary posted on Legacy.com, Lucille was a talented seamstress and was involved with the local Womens Club while her husband was a longtime member of the local Kiwanis Club also serving as President of the club.

She was a homemaker and seamstress and both loved to golf together. "Chick" served in the Korean Conflict and received the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. The obituary states that he was a mechanical engineer for AC Delco for 36 years and worked in the Apollo Program including the Moon Landing Mission. They lived an active life but above all they valued dearly their family.
