Wauwatosa Apartment Complex Project Put On Hold
The 1905 two-story frame-and-stucco summer home of Frederick D. Underwood will stand a little bit longer.

WAUWATOSA, WI — The 1905 two-story frame-and-stucco summer home of Frederick D. Underwood will stand a little bit longer after Wauwatosa officials put plans for a modern apartment complex on hold this week.
Underwood, the former Erie Railroad President who called Wauwatosa home, built it as a summer retreat. In 1995, it was moved to 2515 N. Wauwatosa Ave. — the same area where developer Chris Houden wants to build a 31-unit apartment building.
Original plans for a 5-story, 49-unit apartment complex were scaled back after public input was received over the size and scope of the project.

According to a Milwaukee BizTimes article, Houden said the site’s location, at the northwest corner of the intersection of North Wauwatosa Avenue and West Wright Avenue, is one of the busiest streets in the city with roughly 15,000 vehicles a day.
“Our research indicates a shortage of first time buyer homes, with a growing demand for Wauwatosa citizenship,” Houden said in his letter to Wauwatosa officials. “Buyers are avoiding condominiums and searching for single family homes. We will be marketing to such persons, with the intent of being their transitional housing option.”
