Have a pile of plastic bags building up at home? Our curbside recycling program does not take plastic bags, as the plastic bags get easily tangled in the recycling sorter. However, there are lots of ways to repurpose plastic bags.

Here are ways to repurpose your plastic bags:

  • When shipping a package, use plastic bags to wrap up fragile items.
  • Keep your cereals and snacks crunchy by turning plastic bags into dispensers. (Photo credit to Goodfulness.com)
  • Instead of buying pillows for your patio, buy pillow cases and fill them with plastic bags. You can easily replace new plastic bags inside the pillow case.
  • You can also make a washable pet bed with stuffing made of plastic bags.
  • Braid plastic bags into a jump rope. View the instructions for a braided plastic bag jump rope.
  • When you're painting, put a plastic bag over the paint tray. Clean up is as easy as removing the plastic bag.
  • If you have a fruit tree in your yard, put a plastic bag around ripe fruits to keep them from falling or getting damaged.
  • Use crafting glue to turn plastic bags into beads. Here's an example video explaining this beading craft.

How to Recycle Plastic Bags

You can recycle plastic bags, just not in Wauwatosa's curbside recycling program. Many grocery stores collect plastic bags. The City of Wauwatosa has paused a special plastic bag recycling challenge, but we hope to resume this opportunity soon.
