While You Were Sleeping: Burglary Suspect Breaks into Two Wauwatosa Homes, Steals Cars

During man's third burglary, police officers jumped from the bushes to make the arrest. A foot chase ensued through yards and on rooftops.

WAUWATOSA -- A Wauwatosa couple who woke up one morning to find their car stolen from their driveway, also learned their car was used in a second car theft and a burglary.

Darius Moffett, a 20-year-old Milwaukee resident, is accused in all three crimes. If convicted, Moffett faces up to 18 years behind bars. He was reportedly turned over to Justice Point a $25,000 cash bond.

According to the criminal complaint, a Wauwatosa couple woke up inside their home on the 7300 block of Grand Parkway on the morning of Aug. 19 to find that a suspect, later identified as Moffett, entered their home, stole two sets of keys and drove off with their 2013 blue Honda Accord. Police say a window screen had been cut in two directions to gain entry.

Police say Moffett was at it again less than a week later in Wauwatosa, after police say he cut a screen window of a home on the 6000 block of W. Wells St., entered the home while the residents were sleeping and stole keys to a 2014 white Chevrolet Malibu. Police say window screens were also cut in this crime.

The car was still in the driveway in the morning, but when the residents were away just before noon, Moffett allegedly stole the car, arriving in a blue Honda Accord, according to the criminal complaint.

Aug 24: Milwaukee and Wauwatosa Officers take down Moffett

Acording to his criminal complaint, Moffett used the blue Honda Accord he stole the week before to stage a home burglary on the 1300 block of N. 44th St. in nearby Milwaukee.

Officers observed Moffett conduct an apparent burglary in the area. When Moffett returned to his car a second time, a Wauwatosa Police detective watching events unfold, reportedly jumped out of the bushes, and ordered Moffett to the ground.

According to the complaint, Moffett looked at the detective and then ran through numerous yards and eventually onto rooftops. Another officer took Moffett into custody on the rooftop at 1137 N 43rd Street, Milwaukee.
