Are There More Sex Offenders Located in Whitefish Bay?

WHITEFISH BAY -- In 2014, the Milwaukee Common Council voted to approve a new sex offender ordinance, banning them from living within 2,000 feet of schools, parks and day care centers.

According to a report by the Journal Sentinel this week, supporters of the ordinance back in 2014 said it would protect the public by pushing more offenders out of the city and into the suburbs, where a disproportionately low number of the county’s offenders lived.

We wanted to know what this meant for Whitefish Bay.

Using information compiled by the State Department of Corrections, we were able to create a registered sex offender map for Whitefish Bay, showing locations of each offender.

In total, Whitefish Bay houses 4 such offenders.

Here is a list of the general location, crime and conviction date for each offender.

6000 block N. Shoreland Ave.
Crime: Possession of Child Pornography
Conviction Date: 12/16/2011

4800 block N. Anita Ave.
Crime: Fourth-Degree Sexual Assault
Conviction Date: 12/04/2006

E. Henry Clay St.
Crime: RECEIVING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
Conviction Date: 02/02/2006

What the Journal Sentinel had found was that Milwaukee County suburbs continue to house about 10% of county offenders — about the same percentage as before the ordinance. As it turns out, tighter rules in Milwaukee haven't produced the mass-exodus into the suburbs as initially thought.

Instead, it has given rise to a spike in the homeless sex offender problem - and that's worrisome for public officials.
