Drunk Driver Eludes Whitefish Bay Police Through Town at 75 mph ... But Not For Long

The man was taken into custody and cited for Fleeing/Eluding police and OWI-3rd Offense after police had to disable his vehicle.

WHITEFISH BAY -- A 30-year-old Milwaukee man has been arrested after police attempted to stop the drunk driver in Whitefish Bay, only to have the man speed away at 75 mph through town.

Whitefish Bay police arrested a 30 year old Milwaukee man on August 2 near the intersection of E. Hampton Rd and N Oakland Ave after the man was observed speeding 75 mph in a 25 mph zone According to the report, the vehicle attempted to elude police prior to the stop, and police had to set up Stop Sticks at N. Cramer St. A stop stick is a stick with spikes in it used to deflate the tires of a fleeing vehicle.

The man was taken into custody and cited for Fleeing/Eluding police and OWI-3rd Offense. The man, Stephen A. Schampers, was transported to the Whitefish Bay police department where an intoximeter test showed his BAC to be .10 - more than the legal limit for OWI.

Schampers reportedly requested an alternate blood draw test, and according to the police report, became unresponsive while on his way there. North Shore fire arrived on scene and transported him to Columbia St. Mary's hospital in Milwaukee where he was eventually medically cleared and transported back to police.

He is currently being held in the Milwaukee County Jail on a $750 cash bond.
