The play centers on the relationship between two sisters: Bessie, a virtuous woman who is diagnosed with leukemia, and Lee, a sarcastic and free-spirited mother. For the past twenty years in Florida, Bessie has cared for their Aunt Ruth, who has several collapsed vertebrae and their father Marvin, who was bedridden by a stroke, while Lee moved to Ohio, determined to ignore her sister and father. But, when Bessie's leukemia requires her to seek help from her sister, Lee brings her family to care for her. Together, the family learns and grows to tolerate one another despite tragic and sometimes humorous circumstances that have brought them closer.
