San Rafael Police: Gang Member Nabbed in Recent Shooting

Police say they've arrested a man who admitted his involvement in a gang-related shooting in the Canal neighborhood.

SAN RAFAEL, CA- San Rafael police said this week that they've arrested a man in connection to a shooting that left another man hospitalized in Novato earlier this month.

According to SRPD Lt. Raffaello Pata, a local police officer pulled over a man in the Canal neighborhood on Sunday for a traffic violation.

"As a result of the stop David Scallion-Martinez, 20 of San Rafael was arrested for driving on a suspended license," Pata said in a news release. "During a search of his car, Officer Carpenter found a loaded .44 Magnum handgun hidden under the driver’s seat."

A San Rafael Police Corporal who was assisting the officer in that case noticed a striking resemblance between the suspect and a composite drawing which had been made for an April 4 shooting that happened in the same area of town, according to Pata.

"She also noticed his vehicle was similar to the one reported by the victim and discovered he was a gang member," he said.

After that, the corporal continued investigating the similarities in the cases. Two days later, police pegged Scallion-Martinez as the suspect in the shooting, and arrested him, Pata said.

"The suspect admitted to Detectives about his involvement in the gang-related shooting," he added.

Scallion-Martinez was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and participating in a street gang. He was booked into Marin County Jail under $600,000 bail.
