Tons of food — literally — were collected by Greenwich Boys Scouts Saturday during their annual ‘Scouting for Food’ drive to help restock the shelves of the Neighbor to Neighbor food pantry.

“We’re pretty close to 200 crates (of food) but because of the snow, some residents were not putting out bags of food to donate,” said Kevin O’Shea, scout executive of the Greenwich Council of Boy Scouts of America.

So to make sure the scouts exceed last year’s collection of 220 crates of tuna, pasta, cereals, soups, canned vegetables and other unperishable food stuffs that weighed about three tons, the Greenwich scouts will continue their food drive throughout the month, according to O’Shea and Jessica Reid, the Greenwich Scouts spokesman.

“We need the food. We’ll pick it up for you. Just call us,” Reid said as scouts from Greenwich Troops 11, 35 and 37 sorted the donations at the auditorium of Christ Church Greenwich where Neighbor to Neighbor is located.

State Rep. Fred Camillo (R-151) who was honorary chair of this year’s collection said, “As always the scouts do a great job. But I think the snow impacted it a little bit.” The scouts collected donations at four of the town’s fire houses and at local supermarkets.

So Camillo said he would help in picking up donations from residents.

Next Sunday, March 15, the Greenwich Cub Scouts will be holding the annual Pinewood Derby races at Miller Motor Cars Ferrari dealership on West Putnam Avenue. Attendees will be encouraged to bring donations to the race, Reid said.

To arrange for a food donation pickup, call Reid at 203-869-8424 or email Camillo at acamillo@gmail.com.
