Teens in Custody Following Greenwich HS Altercation

A pushing match became a shoving punching match that prompted a Greenwich Police response; Greenwich FD responded to trash can fire.

At least two teens were in custody Tuesday night following a fight at Greenwich High School, according to authorities.

Greenwich Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said, “We’re still figuring out what happened over there. Nobody was hurt … there was a pushing, shoving, punching match with two principal aggressors who have been identified and probably will be arrested.”

According to school officials, one of the unidentified juveniles is a Greenwich High student, the other is from Stamford. No one was injured, Gray said.

Dear Parents,

There was an altercation at Greenwich High School (GHS) after school today (awaiting late bus dismissal between a small number of students (2-4). The incident is attracting considerable media attention as a large number of police responded to the scene. At this point we know that no one was injured, two juvenile students have been detained by the Greenwich Police Department (GPD) and they are investigating the incident. Initial reports from the GPD tell us that at least one of the students detained is a GHS student and one is from Stamford. I regret that this behavior happened. You can be confident that we will maintain our usual safe and secure building environment at school tomorrow.

Thank you,

Chris Winters, GHS Headmaster

Gray said he could not speculate on what precipitated the incident and that he anticipates having more information to release on Wednesday morning.

About an hour before the fight, the Greenwich Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at 3:05 p.m. triggered by “an intentionally lit waste bin fire in the girls’ bathroom in the science wing,” according to Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Zack. The fire was extinguished by school security guards, Zack said. “The fire marshal will be following up with the school resource officers and school authorities (Wednesday,” Zack added.

“There was no structural damage. It was a metal bin anchored to the wall. There was a fair amount of smoke in the bathroom,” Zack said.
