Stamford Man ID'd As Dead Person Found In Pond In Westport: Police

The man was found floating in a retention pond on Monday morning.

WESTPORT, CT — A Stamford man, who authorities said had been missing since December, has been identified as the dead person found floating in a retention pond in the area of 55/57 Greens Farms Road in Westport on Monday, according to police.

Errol Whyte, 62, was positively identified Monday; he had been missing since December 29, said Westport Police Lt. Eric Woods in a statement.

"The Westport Police Department extends our sincerest condolences to Mr. Whyte’s family as they navigate these difficult times," Woods said.

Whyte had been the subject of a missing person investigation by Stamford police, and now the Westport Police Detective Bureau is conducting a death investigation "to try and determine the circumstances leading to Mr. Whyte’s death."

He was last seen by family members in Bridgeport at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 29, when he was seen driving his red 2002 Ford Explorer on his way home to Stamford. He never arrived.

Two days later, the vehicle was found southbound on Interstate 95 between exits 17 and 18, with Whyte's cell phone, keys and wallet inside.
