University of Iowa Graduate Teaching In Texas Dies After Being Hit By Car

High school teacher/coach Sean Kelley, 43, graduated from Iowa City High School in '91 before earning his degree from University of Iowa.

ROUND ROCK, TX — A Texas teacher originally from Iowa was killed Friday night after being hit by a car while he was on foot.

Round Rock police on Saturday said Sean Kelley, 43, was killed after being hit by a car late Friday night. The driver of the vehicle that struck him fled the scene, and has yet to be found.

Kelley was a coach and teacher at Stony Point High School, officials with Round Rock ISD said in a statement issued Saturday evening. According to his official bio, Kelley graduated from the University of Iowa in 1996 where he studied psychology and education. Before that, he graduated from Iowa City High School in 1991.

“We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends and ask our students, parents, staff, and community members to do the same,” the statement reads. “Please keep your thoughts and prayers with Sean’s family during this difficult time.”

School officials said grief counselors would be made available to students and faculty dealing with the sudden loss of the teacher.

According to a preliminary police investigation, a silver pickup truck struck Kelley before fleeing the scene. Police have no suspects in the hit-and-run incident, Round Rock police officials said via a press release.
