Youngest Marylander Dies Of Coronavirus: MD Health Officials

MARYLAND — The first Maryland child younger than 10 years old has died from the coronavirus, state health officials reported Monday. Since the beginning of the pandemic, nearly 4,500 people statewide have died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, according to the Maryland Department of Health. Three people have died who are 10 to 19 years old.

In the past 24 hours, state health officials said 16 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported, including the child age 0 to 9 years old, the state's youngest fatality.

The age, sex and location where the child resided were not available, state health officials told WBAL, noting the death occurred Sunday, Nov. 29, and a death certificate had not yet been filed.

News of the child's death comes as the state's hospitals swell with coronavirus patients.

More than 1,000 people in Maryland have been hospitalized with the virus since the beginning of November.

• On Nov. 1, state health officials said 523 people were hospitalized with the coronavirus.
• There are 1,527 coronavirus patients as of Nov. 30, according to the Maryland Department of Health.

A surge in hospitalizations mid-month prompted Gov. Larry Hogan to call for bars and restaurants to close after 10 p.m. except for carryout and delivery to prevent flouting of public health orders, and the Maryland Department of Health restricted visitation in hospitals.

Community transmission of the virus continues, with nearly 2,000 new cases reported in the past 24 hours in Maryland. The case rate is 33.81 per 100,000 residents, according to state health data.
