Sparrows Point Fire Engulfs Debris Near Water: Officials
Firefighters aboard boats and engines were among those responding to a blaze at the former steel mill at Sparrows Point.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD - Firefighters were expected to be monitoring a fire at Sparrows Point overnight after a pile of debris went up in flames Monday evening, according to public safety officials.
At 7:32 p.m., officials reported that crews were dispatched to a debris fire at the former steel mill at Sparrows Point and found a large column of smoke in the area.
Fire boats were sent along with a tanker strike team, according to Baltimore County emergency personnel. Crews from Anne Arundel County were said to be assisting in the response.

Appliances had been piled up near the water to be shipped out when they were engulfed in flames, Tradepoint Atlantic's Vice President of Corporate Affairs Aaron Tomarchio told Fox 45 of the debris blaze.
The firm Tradepoint is the owner of the former Bethlehem Steel Mill site; and its 3,100-acre Tradepoint Atlantic development includes plans for FedEx Ground, Pasha Automotive and Under Armour as tenants.

There were no injuries as of 8:18 p.m. related to the fire, according to Baltimore County public safety officials.
As of 10:40 p.m., authorities said that firefighters were making "significant progress" and would be at the scene throughout the night to monitor the situation.
