Speed Camera Program Takes Effect on I-695 on Thursday

Going 67 mph or faster near the I-695/I-95 interchange? It could cost you $40.

Baltimore County, MD โ€” Speeders, your grace period is coming to an end.

Speed cameras were installed on the Interstate 695 inner loop between the exits for US 1/Belair Road and Philadelphia Road earlier in the month.

The speed limit is 55 mph, according to Safe Zones, which operates the speed camera program in partnership with Maryland State Police, the State Highway Administration and Maryland Transportation Authority.

Those going 12 mph above the limit will be fined $40 starting Thursday, June 30, which marks the end of the three-week warning period for speeders to get used to the cameras after they were installed; those driving 67 mph or faster may be ticketed.

Cameras are mounted on white SUVs bearing the Safe Zones logo.

Drivers can receive citations even when workers are not in the work zones.

According to Maryland Safe Zones, drivers and their passengers are injured more frequently than workers in work zones, where changing conditions such as uneven pavement and lane shifts present hazards, even when crews are not actively working on the road.

"National research has shown that four out of five crash-related injuries in work zones are suffered by motorists," according to Safe Zones. "...it is imperative for motorists to obey a reduced speed limit to safely navigate through work zones where roadway alignment and geometric changes, narrow lanes or other potential hazards may be encountered.
