Cinnaminson Resident Helps Send Philadelphia Union to U.S. Open Cup Semifinals

The Union defeated Red Bull New York in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Cinnaminson resident John McCarthy made nine saves to lead the Philadelphia Union over Red Bull New York in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup soccer tournament on Tuesday, according to mlssoccer.com.

The game ended regulation in a 1-1 tie. The Union outshot the Red Bulls, 4-3, in penalty kicks.

Philadelphia will face either the Chicago Fire or Orlando City SC in the semifinals, according to the report.

Eric Ayuk scored first for the Union, in the 56th minute. Lloyd Sam provided the equalizer for New York in extra time.

Sheanon Williams, Vincent Nogueira, Maurice Edu and Fernando Aristeguieta connected on penalty kicks for the Union, as McCarthy turned away one more shot than his counterpart, Luis Robles.

It was the third win for the Union in this year’s tournament. Philadelphia followed a fourth round win over the Rochester Rhinos with a 2-1 victory over D.C. United.

The Union is appearing in the semifinals for the third time in four years. Philadelphia advanced to last year’s final.

The U.S. Open Cup is a tournament open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the country. The Union advanced to last year’s final before falling to Seattle.

There were a total of 91 teams in this year’s tournament. There are 17 Major League Soccer (MLS) teams in the tournament, including the Union. The MLS teams began play in the fourth round on Tuesday. The fourth round concludes Wednesday.
