Can An E-Cigarette Explode? It Did In New Jersey - And Caused A House Fire

Smokers beware: Electronic cigarettes have been known to explode.

That’s what a South Jersey resident learned recently while using a cell phone charger to charge an electronic cigarette, according to The Press of Atlantic City.

The two chargers look the same, but the cellphone charger puts out more electricity, and an e-cigarette doesn’t charge as quickly as a phone. The result can be an e-cigarette that overheats and explodes, according to the report.

E-cigarette explosions appear to be becoming more common.

It’s happened three times in Southern California this year, and a Texas man is suing an e-cigarette store for $1 million after one exploded in his pocket, resulting in second-degree burns.

Earlier this month, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced plans to regulate e-cigarettes.

In Little Egg Harbor, the damage that resulted from the explosion was minimal, but the lesson learned was big: Proper use of an e-cigarette can save a life.
