Another unexplained explosion was reported early this morning in Bucks County.

State Police and federal authorities are now investigating the reports of the mysterious nighttime explosions, some of which have been reported to leave holes in the ground. The most recent explosion was heard around 4 a.m. Tuesday, Springfield Township Police have confirmed.

Bucks County residents from Quakertown to Point Pleasant along the Delaware River reported hearing explosions early Sunday, as well as numerous times over the past several weeks.

Springfield Township Police in a statement said their department and surrounding jurisdictions are receiving "multiple" reports of the loud explosions. Federal investigators are now involved "due to the vast area from which the complaints are being reported and the apparent size of the explosions," Springfield Township police said.

The cause or source of the explosion remains undetermined.

Richland Township Police last month acknowledged the blasts in a Facebook post after receiving inquiries from residents. But in an email to Patch Tuesday, Chief Richard J. Ficco said it has been determined none of the explosions actually happened in Richland Township.

State Police are investigating this, "as it appears that all of the explosions are occurring in the areas they cover," Ficco said.

State Police have not yet returned a request from Patch seeking comment.

A representative with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) confirmed the agency is assisting State Police with the investigation. The lead in the investigation, however, is Pennsylvania State Police, ATF spokeswoman Charlene Hennessy said.

A blast was also heard early Sunday morning in Nockamixon Township, and resident Nick Zangli told the Bucks County Herald it left a four-foot wide cavity in the ground. Residents said their homes shook in the blast, which was felt as far south as Point Pleasant along the Delaware River, the Herald reported.

Hours after Patch published a report Monday regarding the mysterious explosions, readers as far as Coopersburg offered numerous accounts of similar experiences, including one who heard this morning's blasting sound.

One resident in Newtown said he heard several "ground shaking" explosion sounds so loud he actually thought a bomb went off, but those occurred nearly a year ago. The source said he notified police but heard nothing more. It is not clear that incident is at all related to the recent reports of explosions in Upper Bucks County.

Meanwhile, anyone who hears a loud explosion in Bucks County is advised to contact their local police department immediately.

"It is imperative that we get the information as soon as possible in order to track these events. If anyone notices anything unusual along the road, on their property, or elsewhere that seems to be from an explosive device, DO NOT investigate yourself," Springfield Police said.
