America's Safest States: Alabama Not One Of Them

A recent study listing the safest states in the country ranked Alabama in the bottom 10.

WASHINGTON, DC - June is National Safety Month, and with the U.S. recently hit hard by tragedies from wildfires to mass shootings, a recent study released this week showed Alabama among the most dangerous states in the country. Several factors played into that poor ranking.

The personal finance website, WalletHub, released its report on 2019's Safest States in America and had Alabama ranked as the 6th most dangerous state. WalletHub compared the 50 states across 52 key metrics. The data set ranges from assaults per capita to unemployment rate to total loss amounts from climate disasters per capita.

Safety in Alabama (1=Safest; 25=Avg.)

  • 44th – Murders and Non-Negligent Manslaughters per Capita
  • 45th – Assaults per Capita
  • 40th – Loss Amounts from Climate Disasters per Capita
  • 17th – Job Security
  • 31st – Fatal Occupational Injuries per 100,000 Full-Time Workers
  • 36th – Fatalities per 100 Million Vehicle Miles of Travel
  • 17th – Law-Enforcement Employees per Capita
  • 33rd – Sex Offenders per Capita
  • 33rd – Share of Uninsured Population

All of the states that ranked behind Alabama are also in the South. Texas, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi made up the five most dangerous cities. Minnesota, Vermont, Maine, Utah and Connecticut were listed as the safest cities in the country.
