ALEA says roadway deaths fell by more than 66% compared to the previous year following a statewide traffic safety enforcement campaign.

The agency said its enhanced enforcement effort, conducted from Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5, included increased patrols and participation in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign on Alabama highways and Operation Dry Water on the state's waterways.

During the holiday period, ALEA's Highway Patrol Division investigated 263 traffic crashes that resulted in 129 injuries and four fatalities.

During the 2025 Fourth of July holiday, troopers investigated 314 crashes that caused 155 injuries and 12 fatalities.

A Patch previously reported, one person was killed in our Tuscaloosa coverage area during the recent holiday weekend.

Jonathan D. Goodner, 47, died after the 2023 Ford Edge he was driving left the roadway and struck a sign, a ditch and a tree at approximately 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 4.

The fatal crash occurred on Alabama Highway 216 near Brookwood.

In addition to responding to crashes, troopers conducted high-visibility traffic enforcement across the state, issuing 2,639 traffic citations and 1,034 warnings while making 46 DUI arrests.

ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor credited the reduction in fatalities to a combination of enforcement efforts and responsible driving by motorists.

"This year's Fourth of July holiday results demonstrate the positive impact that enforcement, education and personal responsibility can have on public safety," Taylor said in a statement. "Reducing traffic fatalities from 12 last year to four this year is a meaningful achievement and reflects the combined efforts of our Agency personnel, our public safety partners and the countless motorists who made safe, responsible decisions behind the wheel."

On Alabama's waterways, ALEA's Marine Patrol Division investigated nine boating incidents, including one serious incident involving a missing person at Lake Wedowee, where search and recovery efforts remain ongoing.

Marine Patrol troopers also conducted 555 vessel stops during the holiday weekend, issuing 235 citations and 695 warnings while making three boating under the influence arrests.

By comparison, ALEA investigated seven boating incidents during the 2025 Fourth of July holiday period.

The agency said one non-boating fatality occurred that weekend, while a boating crash on July 5 later became fatal when the victim died from injuries on July 9.
