BIRMINGHAM, AL — A resolution to change the name of 16th Street North to Black Lives Matter Boulevard will not be considered by the Birmingham City Council. A report by the Birmingham Times said opposition from activists and some downtown business owners forced the resolution to be withdrawn.

The resolution sought to rename 16th Street North from 1st Avenue North to 6th Avenue North as a way to honor the BLM movement, according to the Birmingham Times.

Black Lives Matter Birmingham, Think Rubix and Be A Blessing Birmingham — prominent local civil rights organizations — requested that the council not rename the street.
