24 New Coronavirus Deaths, 688 New Cases Reported In Alabama

Alabama confirmed 24 new COVID-19 deaths Friday, bringing the statewide fatality total to 2,144.

MONTGOMERY, AL — Friday, the Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed 24 deaths from COVID-19 overnight, and added 688 new cases to its total. The new case number continues the hopeful trend of new cases staying below 1,000.

The deaths added Friday bring the state's fatality total to 2,144.

In addition to keeping new case numbers down, hospitalization from COVID-19 also continue to decline, as the state confirmed that 872 patients remain hospitalized from the virus, a total much lower than numbers seen at this point in August.

Of the 130,393 positive COVID-19 tests in Alabama since March, 51,154 cases are presumed to have recovered from the virus.

Jefferson County continues to pace the state in new cases, reporting more than 100 new cases Friday — the only county in triple digits — and the state continues to see a rise in new cases from Calhoun County, which has been among the counties with the most new cases this week.

The counties reporting the most new cases of COVID-19 Friday:

  • Jefferson County: 109 new cases; 16,349 total
  • Calhoun County: 56 new cases; 2,503 total
  • Madison County: 54 new cases; 6,436 total
  • Mobile County: 44 new cases; 12,167 total
  • Shelby County: 43 new cases; 4,212 total
