31 New Resource Officers Will Be Added To JeffCo Schools
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office plans to add 31 new resource officers to Jefferson County schools.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale announced Thursday the department will hire 31 retired deputies to become School Resource Officers. This will give all 56 of the system's schools an SRO.
The new comprehensive school safety plan is a partnership with both the county commission and the school superintendent, Dr. Craig Pouncey. The county and school system will split the $1.2 million cost, according to Hale.

The sheriff's office will hold training for the new SRO's through the National School Resource Officers Association, Hale said. This training will include the Basic SRO Training Course and the Advanced SRO Training Course.
So far, Hale said, 19 applicants have been selected. More are needed. APOST-certified Alabama law enforcement officers retired in good standing who are interested in applying should contact the Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs Division at 205-325-5709.
