BIRMINGHAM, AL — A 4-year-old girl hit by a stray bullet Sunday night in Gate City has died. Jurnee Coleman was in her home when a bullet entered the window of her apartment and struck her in the head. She had been at Children's of Alabama since the shooting, and died Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened just after 10 p.m. Sunday on Joppa Avenue in the city's Marks Village public housing community.

Neighbors say the little girl was inside the apartment and a relative was getting her juice from the refrigerator when two suspects got into a shootout right outside the apartment.

"This a young girl who will never be able to fulfill her potential. She will never have the joy of experiencing graduation with her peers or achieving her career aspirations. Her family will never know the woman she would become. Those hopes, dreams and aspirations have been cut down by the bullet of a careless, selfish gunman," said Mayor Randall Woodfin via a statement on social media Wednesday.

A 38-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting, but has not been charged with shooting Coleman specifically. Raymond Shine is charged with attempted murder and certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm, according to an Alabama Media Group report.
