696 New Coronavirus Cases Added In Alabama, Surge In Lee County

Jefferson and Lee counties each reported more than 100 new cases of COVD-19 Monday, almost a third of the state's total cases.

MONTGOMERY, AL — The Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed 696 new COVID-19 cases Monday, with nearly a third of those cases coming from Jefferson and Lee counties. The state also reported 16 deaths from the virus, bringing the fatality total to 2,083.

Total, the state has confirmed 117,152 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, with 12,383 of those cases reported in the last two weeks. Alabama's 14-day totals had dipped below 11,000 at one point in the month, but a recent increase in new cases has brought the two-week total above 12,000 again.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 have decreased, with fewer than 1,000 patients currently being treated at Alabama hospitals.

The counties reporting the most new cases Monday:

  • Jefferson County: 141 new cases; 15,872 total
  • Lee County: 101 new cases; 3,348 total
  • Mobile County: 62 new cases; 12,043 total
  • Madison County: 38 new cases; 6,258 total
  • Calhoun County: 31 new cases; 2,377 total
