Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:

  1. Birmingham Fraternal Order of Police and Birmingham Firefighter Association Local 117 are calling for a 15 percent raise from the city. According to Birmingham city officials, the Personnel Board of Jefferson County has approved a five percent pay raise for all city employees which will be implemented in the coming weeks. Councilman Hunter Williams commented that while it is a priority for the city council to pay employees a livable wage that keeps them working in Birmingham, they also have to be able to maintain paying the new salary rate for years to come. (WBRC)
  2. A 9-year-old girl was injured when shots were fired into a vehicle during a domestic incident in Birmingham. Police spoke to the girl's mother who told them shots were fired into her vehicle while her daughter was a passenger by her ex-boyfriend, who is the child's father. Four children were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting, which occurred in the 3600 block of 44th Avenue North. (AL.com)
  3. 25 Black-owned businesses have been selected for Birmingham's newest grant program, Magic City Match. The inaugural cohort is all about increasing the chances for Black-owned businesses to thrive by offering business competency courses, providing access to capital, and giving new market opportunities to Black business owners with brick-and-mortar locations in Birmingham. Over 800 local Black-owned businesses applied and an independent committee selected 25 applicants. (Bham Now)
