BIRMINGHAM, AL - Although sports fans in Birmingham remained hopeful, the news this week that the Birmingham Iron would not finish its inaugural season likely did not shock anyone who has followed Birmingham pro sports over the years. However, disappointment did sweep over the city when the announcement was made that the Alliance of American Football would suspend operations indefinitely, before the first season even concludes.

The promise was there. The fan base was building. The on-field performance was impressive. However, the fate of the Birmingham Iron football team looks like it will suffer the same fate that numerous other professional football teams in Birmingham encountered, as the Alliance of American Football announced Tuesday that the league is suspending operations before the inaugural season is complete.

Hoover Donates 2 Acres To Jeff State For Welding Program

The administration at the Jefferson State Community College Hoover Campus received some good news this week, as the Hoover City Council approved the donation of two acres of land to the college for the school's welding program. The land will be used to build a 5,000-square-foot welding building.

Vet Accused Of 'Pet-Stealing' Sues Former Employer

A veterinarian who practiced at the Banfield Pet Hospital in Alabaster is suing her former employer after the company suspended her without pay and allegedly fueled a social media attack against her over an allegation that she stole a stray dog. Birmingham law firm Sirote & Permutt filed the suit this week on behalf of Dr. Nikki Hamilton-Cox.

Newborn Taken From Hospital By Parents To Avoid DHR Pickup

Parents of a 3-day-old child took the baby from a hospital in order to avoid a Department of Human Resources order to pick up the child, according to police. Police recovered the child Tuesday afternoon.

Woman Arrested, Charged With Following Juror From Brother's Trial

A Birmingham woman has been arrested after authorities say she photographed and followed one of the jurors in her brother's trial on drug charges. Veranda Renee Harris, 59, was taken into custody Tuesday.
