Alabama Confirms Nearly 15,000 New COVID-19 Cases In Last 2 Weeks

MONTGOMERY, AL — Alabama has seen a surge in COVID-19 cases in the last several weeks, but the last 14 days gave seen a significant spike, as 14,838 new cases of the virus have been confirmed in Alabama over that time span. The state reached a record number of new cases in a day Thursday, with 2,164 new cases confirmed in the last 24 hours.

The Alabama Department of Public Health has confirmed 1,042 deaths from COVID-19, with 1,110 patients currently hospitalized from the virus. Of the 48,588 total cases of COVID-19 in the state since testing began in March, 25,783 patients are presumed to have recovered.

While testing has ramped up in the state, the percent of positive tests have as well, reaching 14.6 percent. This is an increase from the 11 percent positive test rate in June.

Jefferson County and Madison County saw the highest spike in new cases over the last 24 hours. Jefferson County has now surpassed 6,000 total cases and leads the state in overall cases and fatalities.

Here are the counties that reported the most new cases of COVID-19 Thursday:

• Jefferson County: 343 new cases; 6,030 total
• Madison County: 287 new cases; 1,907 total
• Tuscaloosa County: 162 new cases; 2,544 total
• Mobile County: 103 new cases; 4,418 total
• Shelby County: 95 new cases; 1,509 total
