Alabama Coronavirus: Case Count Crosses 3,500

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the state is now over 3,500, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Over 3,500 cases of the new coronavirus have been confirmed in Alabama as of Sunday and one more resident has died from complications relating to the illness, according to the latest figures released by the Alabama Department of Public Health.

Of the total cases, 597 are in Jefferson County, an increase of 31 from Saturday.

The confirmed cases — 3,583 — represent an increase of nearly 500 known cases of the virus in the past 24-hour period and the total number of deaths in the state now stands at 93. Over 20,600 tests for COVID-19 have now been conducted in Alabama's public and private health labs.

As of Sunday, 437 patients in the state are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19.

The counties with the most cases as of Sunday afternoon other than Jefferson:

  • Mobile County: 454 confirmed cases; 1,631 total tests; 15 reported deaths
  • Lee County: 236 confirmed cases; 628 total tests; 8 reported deaths
  • Shelby County: 213 confirmed cases; 1,095 total tests; 5 reported deaths
  • Madison County: 187 confirmed cases; 1,084 total tests; 3 reported deaths
  • Chambers County: 200 confirmed cases; 267 total tests; 8 reported deaths.
