Alabama Doubles New Coronavirus Case Total As Testing Increases

MONTGOMERY, AL — After a day that saw one of the state's lowest number of new COVID-19 cases reported in months, the Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed 1,220 new cases of the virus Tuesday, more than doubling the 512 reported new cases Monday.

The state also reported 12 more COVID-19 deaths, bringing the state's fatality total to 1,867. The ADPH reports that 1,312 patients remain hospitalized in Alabama from the virus. Of the 105,815 positive tests for the virus, 41,523 patients are presumed to have recovered.

The uptick in new cases comes after a significant increase in testing throughout the state, as 15,200 tests were administered. In the last two weeks, the state has confirmed 14,290 new COVID-19 cases, still among the lowest 14-day totals over the last two months.

Jefferson County was the only county in the state that reported more than 100 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, confirming 139 new cases.

The counties reporting the most new cases Tuesday:

• Jefferson County: 139 new cases; 14,198 total
• Marshall County: 64 new cases; 3,317 total
• Mobile County: 64 new cases; 11,138 total
• Montgomery County: 61 new cases; 7226 total
• Calhoun County: 46 new cases; 1,982 total
