Alabama Driver's Licenses Will Change Starting In December

The change will not affect current license holders or their driver's license numbers.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A small change will be made to driver's licenses in Alabama beginning Dec. 1, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. New applicants for licenses will now have eight digits in their license numbers rather than seven.

The added digit is an effort to accommodate the state’s growing population, according to the ALEA. The eight-digit numbers have already been used on state-issued non-driver IDs.
