Alabama Hate Groups: Who They Are, and Where They Are Located

MONTGOMERY, AL - The tragic incidents occurring recently in Charlottesville, Va., have shed more light on hate groups, such as those that convened in Virginia over the weekend. A total of 917 organizations across the United States meet the Southern Poverty Law Center’s criteria for being designated as hate groups. These groups include the Ku Klux Klan, skinhead organizations, black separatists and others.

According to a map published by the SPLC, 27 of those organizations are headquartered in Alabama. (For more updates on this story and free news alerts for your neighborhood, sign up for your local Birmingham Patch morning newsletter.)

Five of the organizations are listed as "statewide," without a specific base of operations. Those are:

United Dixie White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK)

Nordic Order Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK)

Militant Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK)

National Socialist Movement (Neo-Nazi)

Aryan Nations Sadistic Souls MC (Neo-Nazi)

The other 22 organizations and their locations are:

League of the South (Neo-Confederate, Wetumpka)

Southern National Congress (Neo-Confederate, Wetumpka)

Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK, Montgomery)

Israel United In Christ (Black Separatist, Birmingham)

Nation of Islam (Black Separatist, Montgomery)

Borderkeepers of Alabama (Anti-Immigrant, Birmingham)

Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK, Birmingham)

League of the South (Neo-Confederate, Tuscaloosa)

United Klans of America (KKK, Ashland)

Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK, Cullman)

The Daily Stormer (Neo-Nazi, Cullman)

Occidental Dissent (White Nationalist, Eufala)

Council of Conservative Citizens (White Nationalist, Eufala)
