Alabama Posts Single-Day High For COVID-19 Cases

After breaking the state record for COVID-19 deaths in a day, Alabama broke its single-day record for new COVID-19 cases.

MONTGOMERY, AL — Alabama passed two pandemic milestones in a matter of 48 hours this week. A day after posting a record-high 57 COVID-19 deaths in one day Wednesday, the Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed 2,283 new cases of the virus Thursday, a single-day record for new cases.

The state has also confirmed 1,357 COVID-19 deaths, with 40 more deaths deemed "probable" from the virus.

In all, the state has confirmed 72,696 COVID-19 cases, with 23,206 of those cases confirmed in the last 14 days. The state reports that 32,510 patients are presumed to have recovered from the virus.

The largest number of new cases reported Thursday came in south Alabama, with Mobile County reporting 354 new cases and Baldwin County posting 259 new cases. Jefferson County reported 277 new cases Thursday.

Other counties reporting triple-digit totals for Thursday were Shelby County (151 new cases), Morgan County (146 new cases), Madison County (145 new cases) and Montgomery County (100 new cases).

These numbers come the same week that several school systems in the state announced they would start the year online, and the Alabama High School Athletic Association announced fall sports would start on time as planned.
