Alabama Reports 1,800 New Coronavirus Cases, 2 Deaths

MONTGOMERY, AL — While a report of more than 1,800 new cases of COVID-19 over 24 hours is nothing to cheer about, the fact that Alabama was reporting more than 3,000 new cases per day just a month ago gives hope to health officials that a light is at the end of the tunnel in regard to the pandemic.

The Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed 1,835 new cases of the virus Monday, and reported two COVID-19 deaths. The ADPH also reported that 2,254 people remain hospitalized with COVID-19 in Alabama hospitals.

The counties in Alabama reporting the most new COVID-19 cases Monday:

• Jefferson County: 229 new cases
• Montgomery County: 134 new cases
• Mobile County: 126 new cases
• Shelby County: 117 new cases
• Madison County: 103 new cases

Some other promising news is that the ADPH reported that more than 100,000 vaccinations were administered over the last week, which is more than twice the number of vaccinations given the week before. Total, the state has administered 255,291 doses of the vaccine out of 521,225 doses delivered to the state.

Dr. Scott Harris with the Alabama Department of Public Health said Friday he realizes that many people in the state are frustrated regarding the vaccine roll-out, but said he is committed to making sure everyone who wants a vaccine gets one.

Harris said he expects changes to the vaccine distribution process to come with the new presidential administration. He said when Pres. Joe Biden's plan is announced the state will relay that new process as soon as possible.
Harris also announced a partnership with Walmart to administer COVID-19 doses, and said details are still being finalized.
