Alabama School Of Fine Arts Will Allow March 14 Student Walkout

The Alabama School of Fine Arts is allowing its students to participate in the nationwide student walkout scheduled for March 14.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - After a school shooting in Parkland, Florida February 14, students and parents all over the country have started speaking up about gun violence and gun control, participating in a variety of protests and demonstrations to show their support of the 17 people killed in the Florida school shooting. One of those demonstrations has been planned by the Women’s March’s Youth EMPOWER group, which announced a national school walkout on March 14, according to the group’s website. At 10 a.m. in every time zone, organizers are encouraging teachers, students, administrators and parents to walk out for 17 minutes — one for every person killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. While some school districts have said they will punish students who leave school to participate, at least one Birmingham school is giving its students permission to participate in the demonstration.

The Alabama School of Fine Arts, located in downtown Birmingham, sent a notice to parents that students will be allowed to participate in the walk-out if they choose.

"In honor of the students and teachers who died in the Parkland, Florida, shooting, ASFA will support all students and employees who want to participate in the March 14 walkout. We will allow students and employees to leave at 10:00 and gather for seventeen minutes on sidewalks that surround ASFA," the notice stated.
