Alabama Voter Turnout In Mid-Term Elections Exceeds Expectations

Secretary of State John Merrill predicted a 35-40 percent voter turnout for the mid-terms, but Alabama voters far exceeded that.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Although expectations were low for turnout by Alabama voters this week, most counties exceeded the predictions by Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill. Merrill said that turnout for the general election would likely be in the 35 percent to 40 percent range, roughly what it was four years ago when voter participation hit a 28-year low.

However, midterm elections saw 49.8 percent of Alabama voters show up at the polls, with some counties reaching nearly 60 percent. Gov. Kay Ivey's home county of Wilcox exceeded 50 percent, while her Democratic challenger and Tuscaloosa mayor Walt Maddox saw Tuscaloosa County's turnout reach almost 50 percent.
