Alabama's 2nd Congressional District Primary: Runoff Projected

A runoff is projected to decide the GOP primary for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District.

MONTGOMERY, AL — Seven candidates are running in the Republican primary for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District, as incumbent Martha Roby is not seeking re-election. Primaries for both Democrats and Republicans were held Tuesday to see who reaches the general election for the House seat.

A runoff in the GOP primary is projected to take place March 31 between Jeff Coleman and Barry Moore. Moore led Jessica Taylor by less than 800 votes, and officials had not declared an official opponent for Coleman until Taylor conceded Wednesday afternoon. Phyllis Harvey-Hall was the projected winner the Democratic primary over Nathan Mathis.

The Republican primary results (96 percent of precincts reporting):

  • Thomas W. Brown Jr.: 1 percent
  • Jeff Coleman: 39 percent
  • Terri Hasdorff: 5 percent
  • Troy King: 16 percent
  • Barry Moore: 21 percent
  • Robert Rogers: 1 percent
  • Jessica Taylor: 19 percent

The Democratic primary results (88 percent of precincts reporting):

  • Phyllis Harvey-Hall: 61 percent
  • Nathan Mathis: 39 percent

The Republican candidates have campaigned on their loyalty to President Donald Trump, which is apropos since the criticism by Republicans against Roby was that she vocally opposed Trump's nomination for president in 2016.
