MONTGOMERY, AL — When the popular vote in Alabama went to Republican President Donald Trump in the Nov. 3 General election, it meant the states electoral votes would go to the incumbent president.

In the Yellowhammer State, 1,441,168 votes went to Trump while 849,648 went to Democratic nominee, and eventual president-elect, Joe Biden.

On Monday, Alabama's nine electors met to cast their votes. The ceremony can be viewed on the Alabama GOP website.

The Electoral College is composed of 538 electors who each cast one vote for president and vice president. Alabama has nine electors, which reflects the total number of senators and representatives it has in the U.S. Congress.

Electors pledge to support the candidate they represent and may not vote otherwise. In Alabama, that means the state's electoral votes went to Trump, who defeated Biden by more than 590,000 votes.

A candidate must receive at least 270 of the 538 electoral votes cast nationwide to be elected president. If no candidate receives 270 votes, the final decision is made by the U.S. House of Representatives — something that has been done only twice in U.S. history.

As it stands, Biden received 306 electoral votes compared to Trump's 232, according to the Associated Press. The votes will be counted and made official in a formal session of Congress on Jan. 6.

In Alabama, a ceremony marking the occasion was held at the state's capitol. The event featured remarks from Attorney General Steve Marshall, Congressman Robert Aderholt and "Uncle Sam," who was portrayed by actor J. Danny Cooper of the American Village.

Victory Christian School student Malia Thibado also performed, along with the Homewood High School Band, led by Director Chris Cooper.

The Alabama State University Golden Ambassadors served as ambassadors for the event, which was hosted by Master of Ceremonies and Secretary of State John H. Merrill.

Alabama's electors are:

  • Jackie Gay of Brewton (CD 1)
  • Jeana Boggs of Deatsville (CD 2)
